TP-Link’s first Wi-Fi 8 router is available to pre-order in the UK, promising up to 19Gbps, dual 10Gbps ports and steadier performance at range than Wi-Fi 7.

TP-Link has opened UK pre-orders for the Archer 8 Ultra, its first router built on Wi-Fi 8. It uses Broadcom’s Wi-Fi 8 chipset, based on the upcoming IEEE 802.11bn standard.

Where previous Wi-Fi generations focused on peak speed, Wi-Fi 8 is designed around consistency, keeping throughput steady at range and when the airwaves are congested. For photographers and videographers moving large raw files and video between a laptop, a NAS and a desktop, that consistency is arguably more useful than a higher headline speed.

Wi-Fi 8 StabilityEngine

TP-Link’s Wi-Fi 8 StabilityEngine combines several new technologies. Available at launch are UEQM, new MCS and 2x LDPC, which TP-Link says deliver up to 33% more consistent throughput than Wi-Fi 7 at mid-to-long range, and up to 24% more under interference. NPCA helps the network stay responsive as more devices connect.

Further features, including DSO, ELR, DRU and multi-access-point coordination (Co-TDMA, Co-SR and Co-BF), will be added via over-the-air updates as the standard matures.

Serious wired connections

The Archer 8 Ultra offers up to 19Gbps across three Wi-Fi 8 bands. More interesting for editing setups are the two 10Gbps auto-sensing WAN/LAN ports and four 2.5Gbps LAN ports. A 10Gbps port for a NAS or editing workstation makes this far more than a home router.

There are 18 internal antennas, with TP-Link claiming coverage of up to 3,600 sq ft (3,000 sq ft in the EU) and up to 200 devices. Multi-Floor Mode reshapes the signal depending on where devices are, and a Range Boost chip improves reception from distant, low-power devices.

AI management and security

AI Wi-Fi Optimizer picks clearer channels automatically, AI QoS prioritises important traffic, and AI ECO reduces power use during quiet periods. Setup is via NFC tap-to-pair and the Tether app, which also includes the Aireal AI Assistant for plain-language questions about your network. There’s a hardware-level VPN, isolated guest and IoT networks, WPA3 and optional HomeShield protection.

Performance figures are TP-Link’s own “up to” values from internal testing, and real-world results will depend on your home and devices.
