Insta360 has launched the Insta360 Mic, a new wireless microphone system that slots between the entry-level Mic Air and the flagship Mic Pro to complete the company’s audio line-up. It is aimed at creators who want more capable sound than a basic clip-on mic offers, without stepping up to flagship money.

The headline features are a customisable E-Ink display on the transmitter and a microSD card slot, which Insta360 says makes this its first customisable E-Ink wireless mic with expandable storage. You can upload a channel logo, emoji or photo to the display, which sounds like a gimmick until you remember how often a mic ends up in shot.

32-bit float recording and AI noise cancelling

More useful for most of us is what that card slot enables. With a microSD card inserted, the transmitter records 32-bit float audio internally as a backup to whatever the camera or phone captures. 32-bit float captures a far wider dynamic range than conventional recording, so a clip that comes in too loud or too quiet can be recovered in post without distortion. Without a card, the mic still records over Bluetooth or through the receiver as normal.

A dedicated AI audio chip handles noise reduction, and there are two automatic gain modes, Auto to prevent clipping and Dynamic to even out volume changes, along with Regular, Rich and Bright voice tone presets.

The system scales well, too. One receiver will take up to four transmitters, and those can be a mix of the new Mic and existing Mic Pro transmitters. Alternatively, two transmitters can send to up to four receivers for multicamera shoots. Owners of the Insta360 X6, X5, Luna Ultra, Luna Pro, GO Ultra and Ace Pro 2 can skip the receiver entirely and connect over Bluetooth with Insta360 Direct Connect, with the X6 and Luna able to take two transmitters at once.

Our take

32-bit float internal recording used to be a flagship feature, so seeing it arrive at this price is good news for anyone filming in unpredictable environments. Cross-compatibility with Mic Pro transmitters is a sensible touch that should make it an easy upgrade path for existing Insta360 users.
