A unique piece of Leica history is coming up for sale. The only known fully working example of the Leica BOX, a 1950s Leitz prototype compact, will be auctioned at the 49th Leitz Photographica Auction in Wetzlar on 28 November, with an estimate of €400,000–500,000.

The Leica BOX was a very different idea from the rangefinders Leitz was famous for. It’s a half-frame camera, shooting 18 x 24mm images on 35mm film loaded in Agfa’s Karat cassette system, in a compact box-shaped body measuring around 100 x 64 x 48mm. The solid metal body has a chrome finish and black vulcanite covering, with an integrated optical viewfinder.

This example carries serial number 000.01 and a fixed Leitz Summaron 3.5cm lens. According to the auction listing, 2.8cm and 5cm lenses were also considered during development, and the lens flange doubles as the release for the removable base plate. It’s also engraved ‘H Weiss, Wetzlar’.

Only one other Leica BOX is known to exist. That one, fitted with a Summaron 2.8cm f/5.6, sits in the Leica Camera Archive and is a non-working design study. The camera going under the hammer is illustrated in the reference book Prototype Leica, while the archive example appears in Jim Lager’s Leica: An Illustrated History.

As Kosmo Foto points out, it’s a fascinating glimpse of a road Leitz didn’t take. A simple, cassette-loading half-frame compact would have been a radical departure for the company in the 1950s, and it’s intriguing to imagine how Leica’s story might have changed if it had gone into production.

For film photographers, it’s also a reminder that half-frame isn’t a new idea. The format is enjoying a real revival right now, with new cameras like the Pentax 17 bringing it back to a new generation, but camera makers were already exploring it seven decades ago.

Leica prototypes and rarities regularly set records at the Leitz Photographica Auction, so the final price could well end up beyond the estimate.
