XTU has launched the S7 Pro Max in the UK, a new action camera aimed at travel, riding and outdoor POV filming that steps up from the S7 Pro with a noticeably larger sensor. At its heart is a 1/1.28-inch RYYB CMOS sensor paired with an AI image signal processor and an F2.8 lens, and XTU is quoting 50MP stills, 4K HDR video at up to 50fps and a 14-stop dynamic range.

The sensor is the headline here. The jump in size over the S7 Pro is the main imaging difference between the two cameras, and the RYYB colour filter array is designed to let more light through than a conventional RGB layout, which should help in the shaded trails, sunsets and city streets that XTU says it has in mind. HDR recording, a Night Mode and an X-LOG profile give more room to work with in mixed light and in the edit.

Stabilisation and Gyroflow support

For mounted and handheld footage, the S7 Pro Max uses XTU’s Super EIS 5.0 stabilisation, with horizon stabilisation and 360-degree horizon correction to keep the frame level. What caught our eye is gyroscope data export with Gyroflow compatibility. That gives you the option of turning off in-camera stabilisation and fine-tuning it in post instead, which is something more often found on pricier action cameras than one at this level.

The lens offers a 158-degree field of view, and there are two displays: a 2.29-inch rear touchscreen for controls and playback, and a 1.4-inch front screen for framing yourself when vlogging. Vertical shooting, voice control and pre-recording are all on board, and XTU’s optional MIC 1 Bluetooth microphone is available separately for better audio.

Battery, mounting and waterproofing

Power comes from a replaceable 1800mAh battery with PD fast charging, which XTU says reaches 80% in around 46 minutes. Quoted runtime is approximately 200 minutes at 1080p/30fps, although as always that will drop when shooting 4K. A magnetic quick-release mount makes it easy to move the camera between setups, and Wi-Fi 6 with the XTU GO app handles wireless preview and file transfer. The camera weighs 138g.

One thing to be aware of is that the body itself isn’t waterproof. For underwater use you’ll need the dedicated housing, sold separately, which is rated to 30 metres.

At its launch price the S7 Pro Max is pitched well below the big-name action cameras, and on paper the larger sensor and Gyroflow support make it an interesting budget option. We’ll be looking to get one in for testing to see how that sensor performs in practice.
