Viltrox has added two new compact APS-C portrait primes to its EVO line-up, the Viltrox AF 75mm F1.8 EVO and Viltrox AF 90mm F2.2 EVO. Both lenses are designed for Sony E, Nikon Z and Fujifilm X mirrorless cameras, giving crop-sensor users a pair of lightweight telephoto options without the bulk normally associated with longer portrait glass.

The 75mm model gives a 112.5mm equivalent angle of view on APS-C, while the 90mm stretches that to a classic 135mm equivalent. That puts both firmly in portrait territory, with the 75mm looking like the more flexible everyday choice for street portraits, half-body shots and urban detail work, while the 90mm is the lens I’d look at for stronger compression, tighter headshots, outdoor portraits and wedding coverage. For anyone still getting their head around equivalent focal lengths, our guide to crop factor in photography is a useful primer.

Optically, Viltrox is leaning on ED and HR glass in both lenses, with the 75mm using 11 elements in 9 groups and the 90mm using 10 elements in 8 groups. The aim is cleaner edge detail, better control of chromatic aberration and more consistent rendering across the frame. Both lenses also focus as close as 0.74m, which should make them useful for detail shots as well as portraits.

What makes these interesting is the balance between reach and portability. The 75mm weighs between approximately 325g and 355g depending on mount, while the 90mm ranges from about 320g to 345g. That is very much in line with the APS-C promise of smaller kits, especially for travel and hybrid creators. Our Sony A6700 review, Nikon Z50 II review and Fujifilm X-E5 review all show how strong the current APS-C camera market has become, and lenses like these help round out those systems.

Viltrox has also included an STM autofocus system for stills and video, along with a 58mm filter thread and USB-C firmware update port. The Sony E and Nikon Z versions add an Fn button, AF/MF switch and click/de-click aperture control, although Fujifilm X users should note that the XF versions do not include those extra external controls.

The launch also follows Viltrox’s recent EVO expansion, including the 35mm and 55mm EVO primes, making the line increasingly relevant for photographers who want small, fast autofocus lenses.
