Zhiyun has opened pre-orders for the Weebill 5, a new three-axis camera gimbal that brings AI subject tracking, a built-in telescoping sling handle and a 3kg payload to a relatively compact 1.08kg body.

For me, the most interesting part of the Weebill 5 is how much Zhiyun is trying to build directly into the gimbal rather than relying on a collection of accessories. The sling handle is integrated into the design and can be pulled out when you want to lower the camera for ground-level shots, while the gimbal can also be configured for high-angle shooting. Zhiyun says the handle uses a high-strength aluminium alloy, one-piece construction.
Anyone familiar with the previous generation will immediately see where this is heading. Our ZHIYUN WEEBILL 3S review found its lightweight construction, ergonomic sling grip and built-in fill light particularly useful, but the Weebill 5 takes the idea considerably further by integrating AI tracking and a larger touchscreen.
The AI module can recognise people, pets, vehicles and other objects, and you can select a subject from the touchscreen, use the trigger or initiate tracking with hand gestures. Zhiyun quotes an effective tracking distance of up to 10m and says the system can automatically reacquire a subject following an obstruction or after it briefly leaves the frame.
That app-free approach is becoming one of the defining features of the latest camera gimbals. We’ve recently seen a similar emphasis on onboard tracking in our DJI RS 5 review and Hohem iSteady MT3 Pro review. For solo operators in particular, being able to put a full-frame camera on a gimbal, identify a subject and have the head follow it without setting up a smartphone connection could be genuinely useful.
The 3kg payload also puts the Weebill 5 firmly into full-frame mirrorless territory. Zhiyun illustrates combinations including the Canon EOS R5 Mark II with an RF 24-70mm F2.8, Nikon Z6-series bodies, Sony FX3 and Alpha cameras, Panasonic Lumix S5 II and Fujifilm X-T5. As always with gimbals, though, overall weight isn’t the only consideration; lens length and how a particular combination balances can be just as important. Zhiyun has also added front-and-rear fine-adjustment controls to the dual-layer quick-release system. The idea is to make small balance changes more precise and reduce the amount of work required after changing a battery or lens. There’s also a third-generation fast vertical system, enabling the camera to switch between horizontal and portrait orientation without adding a separate vertical plate.
Controls are centred around a 1.8-inch full-colour touchscreen. Motor strength, tracking behaviour and shooting modes can be adjusted directly from the gimbal, while Bluetooth 5.0 provides compatible-camera control at distances of up to 10m. Three-axis mechanical locks are also included for transport.
Another potentially handy feature is the built-in 3W fill light. It’s not intended to replace a proper lighting setup, but I can see it being useful for close-range interviews, vlogging or adding some illumination when you’re working quickly after dark. Power comes from a 2600mAh battery, with Zhiyun quoting up to nine hours of operation and a two-hour charging time. USB Type-C PD charging is supported and the Weebill 5 can continue operating from a power bank while connected.
There are Standard and Combo packages. According to Zhiyun, the Standard package contains the gimbal, lens support, CR130 tripod, control and charging cables, wrench and quick-start guide. The Combo adds the AI tracking module, sling grip with wrist rest and a storage bag, so that’s the package to look at if AI tracking is the reason you’re interested in the Weebill 5.
