Sony launches first FE 8-14mm F3.5 Fisheye G zoom

Sony has announced the FE 8-14mm F3.5 Fisheye G, its first fisheye zoom G Lens for full-frame Alpha E-mount cameras, giving photographers and filmmakers a choice of circular and diagonal fisheye perspectives without having to swap lenses.

The big attraction for me is the zoom range. At 8mm, the lens produces a circular fisheye image with a 180-degree angle of view, while zooming to 14mm gives you a frame-filling diagonal fisheye, again with a 180-degree diagonal field of view. Between those two points, you can adjust the composition rather than being locked into the characteristic look of a fixed-focal-length fisheye.

Interestingly, this launch confirms something we were already watching. In August, we reported on rumours that Sony was testing a fisheye zoom lens, although the information at that stage suggested an 8-15mm range. The production FE 8-14mm F3.5 Fisheye G is slightly wider at the long end than those early reports indicated, and now we have the full specifications and launch details from Sony.

It also arrives in a year when fisheye lenses seem to be getting more attention again. Canon recently introduced its RF 7-14mm F2.8-3.5L FISHEYE STM, which similarly moves between circular and diagonal fisheye views. Sony’s lens takes a different approach with its constant F3.5 maximum aperture and, at approximately 314g, is particularly compact for such a specialised full-frame optic.

Sony says the optical design uses ED glass and aspherical elements to control chromatic and other aberrations across the frame and maintain high resolution throughout the zoom range. The lens can also focus down to 0.15m, with a maximum magnification of 0.22x at the 14mm end. That combination should make it possible to push subjects very close to the front of the lens while exaggerating the surrounding environment — one of the classic creative uses of a fisheye.

For photographers, I can see that being particularly interesting for architecture, landscapes and action sports. Video is clearly a significant part of the design as well. Sony has used an internal zoom mechanism, which means the lens does not extend as you change focal length and helps minimise changes in its centre of gravity. That should make life easier when the camera is mounted on a gimbal or incorporated into a more complicated video rig. Sony also says focus breathing is suppressed, while Linear Response MF is provided for more predictable manual focusing.

There’s an even more specialised application here. Sony says two FE 8-14mm F3.5 Fisheye G lenses can be used alongside two VENICE Extension System Mini units to capture spatial content. In this configuration the optical axes can sit around 64mm apart, close to the average distance between human eyes, allowing stereoscopic footage with a natural impression of depth for VR and other spatial productions.

Physically, the lens measures approximately 63.1mm in diameter and 82.8mm long, while weighing just 314g. There’s an aperture ring with switchable click stops, a focus mode switch and a zoom lock switch, while dust- and moisture-resistant construction and a fluorine coating on the front element are intended to make the lens more practical outdoors. Sony will also exhibit the new lens at IBC 2026 in Amsterdam from 11 September.
