Sony has already had a productive year, and if the latest reports are accurate it is nowhere near finished. A list of engineering prototypes said to be in testing points to a substantial run of lens announcements over the next three to six months — and there are some genuinely unusual focal lengths on it.
The reported list comprises an 8-15mm fisheye zoom, a 600mm f/6.3, a 400mm f/4.5, a 28mm G and a 40mm G. The 40mm is reportedly f/1.8, which would make sense given Sony already offers a slower f/2.5 version in its compact G line-up. Alongside these, the 16-28mm f/2.0 GM is still expected in late summer or early autumn.
Two of these stand out. An 8-15mm fisheye zoom would be a first for Sony’s full-frame line and fills a genuine gap — Canon has offered one for years, and it is a versatile creative tool covering both circular and diagonal fisheye in a single lens. The 600mm f/6.3 is the more commercially interesting prospect: a relatively slow aperture suggests a lighter, more affordable super-telephoto prime, which would sit neatly alongside the newly announced FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS as part of a clear push towards accessible long reach.
The 400mm f/4.5 would follow similar logic. Sony’s existing 400mm f/2.8 GM is a professional lens at a professional price, and an f/4.5 version would bring 400mm within reach of enthusiasts — much as Nikon has done with its f/4.5 primes.
The usual caution applies with some force here: engineering prototypes are exactly that, and lenses in testing frequently never ship, change specification, or arrive years later than expected. But the pattern is consistent with what Sony has already done this year, and if even half of this list materialises it would be a strong period for E-mount owners.
