Adobe has completed its acquisition of Topaz Labs, the company behind the popular AI upscaling, sharpening and noise reduction tools used by many photographers and video editors. The deal was first announced in June and closed on 23 September.

The key news for existing Topaz users is that Topaz Labs will continue as a standalone brand, with its apps and models remaining available as separate products. That should reassure the many photographers who use Topaz software alongside Lightroom, Capture One or other editors, and who were vocal on the Topaz community forums about not wanting to be pushed into a Creative Cloud subscription.

What changes

Adobe says Topaz’s image and video enhancement models will be integrated into Adobe Firefly and Photoshop, with upscaling and image enhancement the first areas to benefit. It also plans to bring the technology into more Creative Cloud workflows over time, citing video upscaling, archival restoration and low-light enhancement.

Topaz’s Neurostream technology, which allows AI models to run either on-device or in the cloud, is also part of the deal. Topaz won an Emmy Award for video technology in 2025, and Adobe highlights its role in helping studios and broadcasters restore and remaster legacy footage for modern high-resolution platforms.

Our take

Adobe hasn’t said anything about pricing or licensing changes for current Topaz customers, and that’s the detail most photographers will be watching. Topaz moved to a subscription model of its own before the deal, so the question now is whether the standalone apps continue to be developed at the same pace once the best models also sit inside Photoshop. For now, it’s business as usual for Topaz users, and Photoshop users look set to get noticeably better upscaling.
