Cricut, best known for its crafting cutters, has launched two new machines that bring it into the world of home photo printing. The Cricut StickerPix Print + Cut and Cricut StickerPix Print are designed to turn the photos on your phone into stickers, labels, photo prints and cards.
It’s a new category for the brand, and it puts Cricut up against the compact photo printers from the likes of Canon, Kodak and Fujifilm that have become popular for printing straight from a phone.
Two machines, one process
Both printers use thermal dye-sublimation, which Cricut says produces high-resolution 300dpi prints that are water, scratch and fade resistant thanks to a laminate layer applied during printing.
The StickerPix Print + Cut is the more capable of the pair. It prints, laminates and then cuts custom shapes using a built-in fine-point blade, so you can go from a photo to a finished die-cut sticker in a single pass. It can also produce photo prints, photo cards and custom-cut labels.
The StickerPix Print uses the same printing technology but skips the cutter, working instead with pre-cut Cricut Sticker Sheets in a range of shapes and sizes. It also handles photo prints and cards.
Design Space and AI tools
Both machines connect via Bluetooth to Cricut’s Design Space software on mobile and desktop. Users can start with their own photos, edit templates, use AI-powered features or choose from a library of more than 1.8 million sticker images. Cricut notes that the full content library and some software features, including Cricut AI, require a paid Cricut Access subscription.
“Cricut StickerPix brings these trends together and makes it incredibly easy to turn what’s on your screen into something you can hold, share, and make your own,” said Ashish Arora, CEO at Cricut.
Our take
For photographers, dye-sub printing is a proven route to durable, continuous-tone small prints, and the ability to cut around a subject is something traditional mini photo printers can’t do. The subscription requirement for some features and the reliance on Cricut’s own sticker sheets are worth bearing in mind when weighing up running costs.
