Our Verdict

The PNY EliteX-PRO90 UHS-II SDXC Card boasts advertised transfer speeds at the top end of the UHS-II technology; it also comes with a price tag to match, so there’s a lot at stake with a card of this calibre. Rated at Class 10, U3, and V90, it’s an ideal choice for any photographer or videographer who needs top-end read and write speeds for fast shooting of high-resolution video. Although our tests showed it fell slightly short of its advertised 300MB/s read and 280MB/s write speeds, it still clocked in impressive results and kept up with all the demands put upon it by the Canon EOS R5 C and Sony A7 III. The card adheres to all the usual standards, so it is fully compatible with a broad range of devices, from DSLRs to Mirrorless and the latest range of 8K video cameras. Although PNY might not be one of the forerunners in flash memory storage, this card proves that the company is a formidable force in high-end memory.

What is the PNY EliteX-PRO90 UHS-II SDXC Card?

The PNY EliteX-PRO90 UHS-II SDXC Card is a high-performance memory card that has been tailored for serious photographers and videographers; as a side note, PNY also makes a V60 version of the card, which is cheaper. The card utilises the latest UHS-II interface and boasts read and write speeds of up to 300MB/s and 280MB/s, respectively, making it a great solution for capturing high-resolution content. As is standard with these high-end cards, it holds a triple rating of Class 10, U3, and V90, further outlining it as a choice for Pro photographers and videographers.

Alongside the 5-year limited warranty, there are a set of durability features such as being magnet-proof, shock-proof, and temperature-proof, all reinforcing the pro level of this card and its build quality.

If you’re looking to invest and want a future-proof card, then this card is backwards compatible with UHS-I cameras, so great for the SOny A7 III, which has one UHS-II slot and one UHS-I slot, meaning that this card will work fine in either slot.

Features

The PNY EliteX-PRO90 UHS-II SDXC Card is packed with features that make it a great choice for professionals. One of its big USPs is its triple-tiered rating: Class 10, U3, and V90. This ensures that the card can handle a variety of high-demand applications, from burst-mode photography to 8K Ultra HD videography. The V90 rating is what essentially marks this out as a professional card rather than an enthusiast, at least the rating and the accompanying price, as it guarantees a minimum sustained write speed of 90MB/s.

The card also features impressive quoted read and write speeds of up to 300MB/s and 280MB/s, respectively. While these numbers may vary depending on the host device, they show the card’s optimal capability for storing high-resolution content. The card also offers a comprehensive set of durability features, including being magnet-proof, shock-proof, and temperature-proof, providing peace of mind.

Performance

The PNY EliteX-PRO90 UHS-II SDXC Card largely lives up to its claims, proving itself as a reliable high-performance storage solution for professionals and enthusiasts with a kit that places a heavy demand on memory. While the card did fall slightly short of its advertised read and write speeds of 300MB/s and 280MB/s, respectively, it still delivered impressive numbers, clocking in at around 242MB/s for reading and 232MB/s for write speeds. These rates were consistent across multiple devices, including the Canon EOS R5 C and Sony A7 III, which are known for their high data rate demands.

After the computer test, I put the card to the test firstly as a backup to the main card in the A7 III and R5 C and then as the primary storage for both stills and video. Over a month and somewhere in the region of 12 shoots, albeit swapping the card out for two others that were also on the test, the card performed well with no performance issues.

The test results from the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test are as follows:

Read Speed: 242MB/s
Write Speed: 232MB/s

Final thoughts

The PNY EliteX-PRO90 UHS-II SDXC Card is an ideal storage solution for high-demand cameras. While it comes with a price tag that may give you pause, it offers plenty of features that professional photographers and videographers will find essential and take a search around. This card can be found for significantly cheaper. Its high-speed read and write capabilities are impressive and translate into real-world performance through my test with the Canon EOS R5 C and Sony A7 III.

While there isn’t a great deal between each SD card due to the format standards, this PNY example seems solid enough and gave no reason no to think that the performance wouldn’t hold up for a considerable time. Overall, it is a solid choice and alternative to SanDisk and Lexar.
