Canon has released firmware version 1.1.0 for the EOS R6 V and the EOS R6 Mark III, and for R6 V owners it delivers the feature many have been waiting for since launch: flash support. When the R6 V was announced back in May, Canon confirmed that external flash support would follow in a firmware update rather than being available out of the box — and this is the company making good on that promise. Both updates are available now from the Canon UK support pages.
For the EOS R6 V, the headline addition is support for external flash units, bringing with it flash firing, E-TTL balance, E-TTL II metering, slow synchro, flash function settings and flash custom function settings. Alongside that, the update adds support for Canon’s BR-E2 Wireless Remote Controller — with functions assignable to Remote function buttons 1 and 2 through the Customize buttons for shooting menu — plus a grid display during movie recording and support for Canon’s Software Development Assistance Kit (EDSDK/CCAPI). Several bugs are squashed too, including an issue affecting shooting when auto power-off triggered during interval timer shooting, a problem with the camera not being recognised over USB when connected to a smartphone, and incorrect movie digital IS metadata at frame rates below 24fps in Slow & Fast Motion mode.
It’s worth being realistic about what that flash support actually means in practice, because the R6 V’s hardware sets the limits. The camera has no mechanical shutter, which caps the flash sync speed at 1/60 sec — a significant constraint if you’re trying to overpower daylight outdoors. It also lacks the traditional five-pin hotshoe, so it works natively only with flashes designed for Canon’s Multi-function Shoe, with older units requiring a compatible adapter. This is a video-first camera, and the flash implementation reflects that: genuinely useful for indoor fill and controlled situations, but not a route to serious strobist work.
The EOS R6 Mark III gets a similar, slightly lighter update. It also gains BR-E2 support, the movie-recording grid display and SDK support, and inherits a feature introduced on the R6 V: AF for close-up demos can now be set during movie recording in Movie manual exposure, Movie auto exposure and other Creative Zone modes, working in combination with exposure and AF area settings. That’s the setting which overrides face detection when you hold an object up to the camera — a boon for anyone shooting product demos or unboxings — and it was previously restricted to one specific mode.
Neither update is transformative, but both are welcome. Canon following through on a stated launch commitment is worth acknowledging, and the close-up demo AF trickling across to the R6 Mark III is exactly the sort of quality-of-life improvement that makes a camera nicer to live with.
