Krea, the independent AI lab behind the Krea 3 image editing model that we covered at launch, says its new highest quality mode, Krea 3 Ultra, has ranked in the top five of Arena.ai’s Multi-Image Edit leaderboard. According to Krea, it sits at number four as of 20 October, behind only three OpenAI models and ahead of every model from Google, Meta and ByteDance, including Nano Banana Pro, Nano Banana 2.1, Seedream 5.0 Pro and Muse Image.

How the ranking works

Arena.ai ranks AI models using blind, head-to-head votes. Voters are shown two anonymous edits of the same image made from the same instruction and choose the one they prefer without knowing which model produced which. Those votes are converted into an Arena score, a rating system similar to the Elo scores used in chess. The Multi-Image Edit leaderboard specifically ranks edits that draw on more than one input image.

What makes the result notable is the size of the company behind it. Krea has a team of about 35 people and has raised over $80m, while every other company in the top five is valued in the hundreds of billions or trillions of dollars.

Speed as well as quality

Krea also claims a significant speed advantage. In its fast mode, Krea 3 delivers a 2K edit in under 8 seconds end to end, compared with around 30 seconds for Nano Banana Pro and around 40 seconds for GPT Image 2.5, according to the company.

The model can edit a selected region while leaving the rest untouched, place elements precisely using bounding boxes, and work from up to eight reference images per edit. LoRA training for consistent characters, products and styles is listed as coming soon.

Our take

Leaderboard positions move quickly in AI, so this is a snapshot rather than a permanent ranking. Even so, it is a reminder that the best tools for photographers and retouchers will not necessarily come from the biggest names, and the speed claims are what would matter most in a real editing workflow.
