Sigma has announced the Sigma fp2, the long-awaited successor to the modular fp that first appeared in 2019. It keeps the minimalist, box-like design that made the original such a cult favourite, and Sigma says it is the world’s smallest full-frame camera body, but almost everything inside has been reworked to make it a far more capable stills and cinema camera.

Partially stacked sensor and faster performance

At the heart of the fp2 is a new 24.5MP partially stacked full-frame CMOS sensor. Its faster readout significantly reduces rolling shutter, which was one of the biggest frustrations with the original fp’s electronic-only shutter, and it enables bursts of up to 20fps for 200 JPEG or 180 DNG frames. The fp2 still relies on an electronic shutter, with speeds from 1/25,600 sec to 30 sec.

Autofocus has also been upgraded, combining phase detection with contrast detection for better speed, accuracy and low-light performance. Subject detection now covers people, dogs, cats and, new for the fp2, birds, all with eye AF.

Stills are saved as 14-bit lossless compressed DNG raw files or JPEGs, and there are 13 colour modes accessed via a dedicated Color button, including Standard, Cinema, 709 Look and a Monochrome mode with ten toning effects.

A full-fledged cinema camera

Video is where the fp2 really steps up. It records 6K OpenGate and ProRes RAW up to 6K at 29.97fps, along with 4K at up to 59.94fps, or up to 119.88fps in crop mode. L-Log is supported, and Sigma quotes up to 14.1 stops of dynamic range in 4K full-frame L-Log. A top-mounted switch flips between STILL and CINE modes, each with its own interface.

Practical upgrades include about 70GB of internal storage, which recording can continue onto when the SD card fills, plus UHS-II SD and external SSD support over USB 3.2. The 3.15-inch touchscreen now tilts up 90° and down 45°, and battery life is around 30% better than the original fp. With the optional HU-21 hot shoe unit and Panasonic XLR accessories, the fp2 can also record 32-bit float audio.

Sigma’s Director’s Viewfinder returns, now simulating the framing of cameras including the ARRI ALEXA 35 and Sony VENICE 2 and BURANO, along with anamorphic desqueeze from 1.25x to 2.0x.

SmallRig has already announced its accessory range for the camera, including a cage with a wooden grip, HDMI clamp, Arca plate and HawkLock NATO rail at $79.99 and an L-shaped mount plate with a wooden handle at $49.99.

Our take

The original fp was a brilliant idea held back by rolling shutter, slow autofocus and fiddly handling. On paper, the fp2 tackles almost all of those issues while keeping the tiny size and Sigma’s excellent colour, which makes it one of the most interesting full-frame cameras of the year for both photographers and filmmakers.
