7Artisans has teased an AF 18mm F2.0, a compact autofocus prime for APS-C mirrorless cameras weighing a claimed 108 grams. It will be offered for Sony E, Nikon Z and Fujifilm X mounts, and it belongs to the company’s Lite series — the range of small, affordable autofocus lenses that has been quietly filling gaps the major manufacturers leave alone.
On APS-C, 18mm gives roughly a 27mm equivalent field of view. That is a genuinely useful everyday focal length: wide enough for interiors, landscapes and street work where context matters, without tipping into the exaggerated perspective of a true ultra-wide. Paired with an f/2 maximum aperture it should also cope reasonably in low light, which is not a given at this end of the market.
The weight is what makes it interesting. At 108g with a metal body, this is light enough to leave permanently mounted on a small body — an X-E5 or a Z50 II — without unbalancing it. That is precisely the point of a lens like this: the camera you actually carry beats the one you leave at home. 7Artisans has confirmed an STM focusing motor, consistent with the rest of the Lite line, and a 52mm filter thread was visible in earlier leaked images.
One thing nobody has confirmed
Everyone is calling this a pancake, and it may well be, but it is worth noting that 7Artisans has not published a length. A lens earns the pancake label on barrel depth — broadly 30mm or less from the mount flange — not on weight. Plenty of light lenses are long, and 108 grams tells you nothing about how far the barrel protrudes. Until 7Artisans publishes a figure, “compact” is the honest description.
Also still missing: price, launch date, optical formula and minimum focusing distance. The lens was first spotted in leaked images back in May alongside a 10mm f/4 pancake and a 10mm f/2.5 full-frame fisheye, with some initial uncertainty over whether it would autofocus at all. The new teaser settles that question.
It follows the AF 40mm f/2.5 LITE, which arrived recently for Nikon Z at just 90 grams, and continues a broader shift among Chinese lens makers from manual focus into affordable autofocus. For APS-C shooters — particularly on Nikon Z and Fujifilm X, where third-party support has lagged behind Sony E — that is a welcome direction of travel.
