Leica has announced the Leica SL3-P, describing it as the most advanced full-frame camera in its SL-System to date. Aimed squarely at professional photographers and filmmakers, the new mirrorless flagship combines a newly developed 44MP back-side illuminated sensor, a significantly upgraded hybrid autofocus system and an extensive suite of professional video features in a characteristically understated Leica body.

Building on the foundations of the existing SL-System, the SL3-P introduces a 44MP BSI full-frame sensor capable of delivering up to 14 stops of dynamic range, while its Multi-Shot mode can generate ultra-high-resolution 176MP images. Leica says the camera’s new hybrid autofocus combines phase detection, depth mapping and contrast detection AF, allowing continuous shooting at up to 40fps with full autofocus support across 819 autofocus points.
Video creators are equally well catered for. The SL3-P records up to 8K resolution, including 8.1K Open Gate recording, while also offering 5.9K recording at up to 60fps and 4K at up to 120fps for slow-motion capture. Apple ProRes recording is supported up to 5.8K, while Leica has also introduced new Leica Pure and Leica Cine LUTs for L-Log workflows, giving filmmakers additional flexibility during colour grading.
One of the camera’s more distinctive features is its minimalist appearance. Like Leica’s previous ‘P’ models, the iconic red Leica badge has disappeared in favour of a discreet all-black design. The magnesium and aluminium body is manufactured in Germany and carries an IP54 rating for dust and splash resistance.
Professional workflows have also been given considerable attention. The SL3-P supports native tethering with Adobe Lightroom Classic and Capture One, direct Camera-to-Cloud uploads via Adobe Frame.io and Leica’s implementation of Content Credentials technology, allowing photographers to embed tamper-evident authenticity metadata directly into image files. As AI-generated imagery continues to blur the distinction between genuine and synthetic photographs, this could prove one of the camera’s most valuable additions for working professionals.
Connectivity includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB-C for rapid transfers through the Leica FOTOS app, while the user interface continues Leica’s emphasis on simplicity with separate photo and video modes, orientation-aware menus and fully customisable controls.

Alongside the camera, Leica has also introduced two new L-Mount lenses. The Summilux-SL 50mm f/1.4 ASPH. is claimed to be the world’s most compact autofocus 50mm f/1.4 lens, while the APO-Macro-Elmarit-SL 100mm f/2.8 brings true 1:1 macro reproduction together with apochromatic optical correction for both close-up and portrait photography.
If you’re already invested in the L-Mount ecosystem, it’s also worth reading Camera Jabber’s coverage of the Leica SL series, along with its buying guides to the best L-Mount lenses and tutorials covering professional hybrid shooting workflows, which provide useful context for where the SL3-P now sits within Leica’s growing full-frame lineup.
