Sony has launched a new 4K-enabled action camera, the Sony FDR-X3000R, which is waterproof up to 60m and promises new image stabilisation technology for smoother video footage. Chief among the Sony FDR-X3000R specifications is what the company has dubbed  its B.O.SS technology. It’s nothing to do with Bruce Springsteen, unfortunately, but rather stands for Balanced Optical SteadyShot image stabilisation and has the lofty goal of ending jumpy, jerky video footage that we come to expect from action cameras. What’s more, the B.O.SS image stabilisation system even compensates for strong camera shake and is available in 4K and high speed recording modes. The Sony FDR-X3000R also comes equipped with a new 1/2.5 type 8.2-megapixel Exmor R CMOS image sensor. Sony says its new sensor offers big pixels designed for video, with a 16:9 aspect ratio and Sony’s BIONZ X processor enabling full pixel readout without pixel binning. This is the same processor that powers the highly regarded range of A7 Sony cameras.

In addition to being able to shoot 4K video, the Sony FDR-X3000R also allows users to capture 8.3-megapixel (approximate) interval recording shots for 4K time-lapse videos, which you can edit using Sony’s free Action Cam Movie Creator PC software. You can also capture high-bitrate recordings in 4K at 100Mbps, Full HD at 50Mbps in the XAVC S™ format, and a new stereo mic with Wind Noise Reduction technology helps to ensure clearer audio, Sony says. The Sony action camera boasts a new ZEISS Tessar wide-angle lens, as well as a newly designed, wearable, mountable Live-View Remote. Sony’s latest Live-View Remote is approximately 30% smaller than its predecessor and can be attached to mount accessories such as the optional Handlebar Mount (VCT-HM2) using the supplied mount adaptor. You can also wear it like a wristband or attach it to accessories such as the Sony Shooting Grip (VCT-STG1) or new Finger Grip (AKA-FGP1). Users can also control the camera with their smartphones and tablets with Sony’s free PlayMemories Mobile™ app. Other features include a design that’s waterproof up to 60m and a supplied Underwater Housing (MPK-UWH1) and an in-built tripod socket.
