Insta360 has stepped into the premium pocket gimbal camera space with the Luna Ultra, a Leica co-engineered camera built for creators who want stabilised video, high-resolution imaging and a more flexible shooting setup without moving into a larger camera system.

At first glance, this looks like Insta360’s clearest attempt yet to blend the convenience of a pocket vlogging camera with some of the image-making tools we usually associate with more serious hybrid kit. The headline feature is a dual-lens system: a Leica Summicron lens paired with a 1-inch 8K sensor, plus a secondary telephoto setup using a 1/1.3-inch sensor and f/2.0 aperture. That second lens gives the Luna Ultra a useful range of focal lengths, with up to 12x zoom and 6x lossless zoom.

For video, Luna Ultra records up to 8K at 30fps with Dolby Vision, and it also supports 10-bit I-Log for anyone who wants more room to grade footage later. Insta360 says the camera offers up to 14 stops of dynamic range, while PureVideo Mode is designed to improve low-light shooting by reducing noise and lifting brightness and detail up to 4K60fps.

What catches my attention most, though, is the detachable 2-inch OLED touchscreen. Rather than locking you to the camera body, the screen can be used for remote monitoring and control with HD transmission up to 20 metres. For solo creators, that could make framing walk-and-talk pieces, low angles or tripod shots far less fiddly.

The Luna Ultra also combines 3-axis mechanical stabilisation with electronic image stabilisation, while Deep Track 5.0 adds subject-tracking tools including Auto Tracking, Active Zoom Tracking, Group Tracking and Smart Framing. Add in Leica Natural, Leica Vivid and Leica Chrome colour profiles, ACES support, built-in timecode, AI-assisted editing and compatibility with Insta360 Mic systems, and this starts to look less like a casual gadget and more like a compact production tool.

Insta360 says the camera weighs just over 200g, includes 47GB of usable built-in storage, supports microSD cards up to 1TB and uses a 1550mAh battery rated for up to four hours of operation. The company also lists fast charging to 80% in around 23 minutes, which should help if you are shooting throughout the day rather than grabbing the odd clip.

The Luna Ultra arrives in Cosmic Black and Stellar White, with accessories including a POV Head Tracker, Black Mist filters, a Wide-Angle Lens expanding the field of view to 108°, and ND filters. It also marks another stage in Insta360 and Leica’s six-year imaging partnership, which Insta360 says now spans five co-developed products.
