Viltrox has added another tempting option to its ever-expanding autofocus range with the AF 26mm F2.8 EVO, a compact full-frame pancake lens built for everyday carry. Available in Sony E and Nikon Z mounts, it is aimed at street photography, architecture, environmental portraits, travel and general visual storytelling — the sort of grab-and-go lens that stays on the camera rather than in the bag. On paper it looks like classic Viltrox: sensible specification, genuinely useful design, and a price that undercuts the competition.
The headline feature for us is the handling. This is a pancake lens with both a dedicated aperture ring and a separate focus ring, a level of tactile control that is genuinely rare in this slimline category — most pancakes force you to give up physical controls in the name of size. Viltrox has also gone with precision-machined metal construction and added dust and splash resistance around the mount, so it should stand up to being used rather than babied.
Optically it uses 8 elements in 6 groups, including two aspherical elements and one high-refractive element, and Viltrox claims strong sharpness even wide open at F2.8. A gear-type STM motor drives the autofocus, and the minimum focusing distance of 0.2m is close enough to make the most of that 26mm angle of view for detail shots as well as wider scenes. The 26mm focal length itself is an interesting choice — a touch wider than the classic 28mm, giving an 81.2° field of view that sits naturally between the usual wide-angle staples.
The practical touches are well judged too: a magnetic front cap for quick removal, a standard 43mm filter thread, and a built-in USB-C port for firmware updates via the Viltrox Lens App. Our only reservations are the obvious ones for the category — F2.8 is moderate rather than fast, and 26mm is a slightly unusual focal length that will suit some eyes more than others. But as a lightweight, affordable full-frame prime with real manual control, it makes a strong case for itself.
