Panasonic has added a compact ultra-wide prime to its full-frame LUMIX S line-up: the LUMIX S 20mm F2.5. It arrives alongside a set of free firmware updates for the LUMIX ecosystem, the most significant of which finally brings faster frame rates to the pocketable S9. Details are on Panasonic’s site.
A small 20mm, and why that fits
The S 20mm F2.5 (S-S20) is an L-Mount lens pairing a genuinely wide 20mm focal length with a moderately bright F2.5 aperture in what Panasonic describes as an exceptionally compact design. That combination is the point. A 20mm gives you a properly wide field of view — for interiors, landscapes, astro and vlogging — while F2.5 keeps the optic small rather than chasing a fast aperture that would make it big and heavy.
It suits the direction the L-Mount system has taken. Panasonic’s compact full-frame bodies, the S9 chief among them, are built around portability, and a small ultra-wide is exactly the kind of lens that keeps that promise rather than undoing it with a large front element. It pairs naturally, too, with Sigma’s recently announced 20-60mm and its own compact primes — the wide end of a genuinely light full-frame kit is filling out nicely.
The firmware is the more useful news for S9 owners
Alongside the lens, Panasonic is releasing firmware and app updates across the ecosystem, and the standout is for the LUMIX S9.
The S9 gains 4K 60p/50p and FHD 120p/100p/60p/50p recording in MP4 (Lite), which is a meaningful addition to a camera that shipped without higher frame rates in those modes. For anyone using the S9 for video — and its compact form makes it an appealing everyday and travel movie camera — 4K60 and 120fps Full HD open up smoother motion and slow-motion options that were not there before. It also gains expanded assignable functions for the Lens Fn button and new compatibility with the LUMIX Flow app.
The S1RII and S1II receive updates too, alongside improvements to the LUMIX Lab and Flow apps. All of it is free.
Our take
Neither part of this is dramatic, but both are welcome and sensibly judged. A compact 20mm is a genuine gap-filler for a system built on small full-frame bodies, and £429 is a reasonable price for an own-brand ultra-wide prime — the sort of lens that earns its place by being light enough to always have with you.
The S9 firmware is arguably the better story, because it improves a camera people already own at no cost, and it addresses one of the more common criticisms of the S9 at launch. Free frame-rate upgrades delivered by firmware are exactly the kind of thing that builds loyalty to a system.
The one thing worth noting on the lens is that a silver finish is a Panasonic Direct exclusive, so anyone wanting it to match a silver body will need to buy direct rather than from a dealer.
