Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro on Tuesday. SmallRig had rigs on sale by Wednesday. Two kits are available now — the Creator Kit and the Cinema Kit — both built around a new accessory mounting system that looks like the more significant development here. SR-MicroSlide is the interesting bit
Both kits introduce SR-MicroSlide, a system that lets handles and accessories be repositioned anywhere around the cage and locked quickly, rather than bolting into fixed threaded holes.
That matters more than it sounds. The usual frustration with a phone cage is that the mounting points are where the manufacturer decided they should be, which is rarely where you want them once a microphone, a light and a monitor are all fighting for space. Being able to slide a handle a few centimetres to clear a cable, or move a mount to rebalance a rig, is the difference between a cage you configure once and one you adapt shot by shot.
The Creator Kit
The lighter of the two, built around a dual-handle design for handheld filming, livestreaming and general content work. Both handles rotate steplessly for a comfortable grip at different angles, and convert into top handles when you need to shoot low or carry the rig.
The feature we would single out is the detachable wireless remote, which controls zoom, exposure compensation and switching between front and rear cameras at up to 10 metres. For anyone filming themselves — pieces to camera, tutorials, solo interviews — that removes the walk back to the phone between takes, and it means you can adjust framing while you are actually in shot.
The Cinema Kit
The fuller setup, aimed at professional mobile production. It uses a rotating wooden handle with stepless adjustment that converts from side to top handle, and adds broader accessory support covering microphones, lights, monitors, tripods and NATO accessories.
The optical side is what separates it: it ships with 67mm, T-Mount and 17mm lens backplates, plus an Arca-Swiss adapter and NATO rail. Those three backplates cover most of the phone lens and filter systems in circulation, so you are not locked into one manufacturer’s threading — and the Arca-Swiss adapter means the rig drops onto a tripod head without an additional plate.
Worth thinking about
The case for rigging a phone has strengthened this week. With the iPhone 18 Pro adding a variable aperture and manual controls including a histogram, it is a more serious camera than its predecessors — and a camera you operate deliberately is one you want to hold steadily.
The counter-argument is the familiar one: by the time you have added a cage, handles, a microphone, a light and a monitor, you have assembled something that costs and weighs about as much as a small mirrorless camera. The honest answer is that it depends whether the phone is your main camera or your second one. For behind-the-scenes work alongside a main body, or for social content where vertical capture matters, a rig makes the phone genuinely usable rather than merely convenient.
