SmallRig has launched the OrBrella FM 60B, a foldable LED soft light co-created with CineD co-founder Johnnie. It combines a light and softbox in one umbrella-style unit that SmallRig says can be opened and ready to shoot in 15 seconds.
It’s worth noting from the outset that the OrBrella is being sold through a crowdfunding campaign on SmallRig’s own site, rather than as a standard retail product, with first deliveries expected in January 2027.
Designed for fast location work
The OrBrella started as an idea from Johnnie at CineD and was developed with SmallRig to solve a familiar problem for filmmakers: getting professional-quality soft light without carrying and assembling bulky lighting kits.
SmallRig says its patented quick-deploy structure opens in around 15 seconds. When packed, it measures 34cm and weighs 1.3kg, which SmallRig pitches at travel, outdoor shoots, interviews, documentaries and run-and-gun productions.
Flexible light
The LED panels are detachable and can be flipped and adjusted, so the light can be made softer or harder depending on the situation. SmallRig describes the OrBrella as a 2-in-1 light and softbox with a 4-in-1 light effect, and says it is designed to deliver natural skin tones with virtually zero colour shift.
Settings can be adjusted on the unit itself or remotely through the SMALLGOGO app. The light can be powered by V-mount batteries and other power sources, making it practical away from mains power.
Our take
Umbrella-style soft lights are nothing new, but building the LED into the structure and making it quick to deploy could make a real difference for solo shooters and small crews working on location. As with any crowdfunded product, it’s worth bearing in mind that delivery dates can move.

The OrBrella FM 60B has a regular price of £180.90, with a special launch price of £153.90 running from 25 September to 8 November 2026. On SmallRig’s US campaign page it’s listed at $169.99, down from $199.99. First shipments are expected from 20 January 2027. Backing is via the SmallRig website.
