A supportive waist belt for heavier urban photography days out

Shimoda Design has announced the Urban Explore Waist Belt, a new accessory built to add extra comfort and stability to its Urban Explore backpack system.

The idea here is simple, but very useful: take some of the load off your shoulders and move it down to your hips. Anyone who has carried a camera backpack through a long city shoot, a busy airport, or a full day of commuting will know how quickly shoulder fatigue can creep in. The Urban Explore Waist Belt is designed to help with exactly that, especially when the bag is carrying heavier camera gear, lenses, a laptop, and the everyday bits we all seem to accumulate.

Shimoda has built the belt as a companion to the Urban Explore backpack range, keeping the design clean and low-profile rather than turning the pack into a full hiking-style carry system. It is lightly padded, so it should add support without feeling bulky, and the brand says the dual-adjust slip-locks are there to help users fine-tune the fit quickly.

One of the more interesting touches is the belt’s compatibility with Shimoda Top Loader bags. By sliding the belt into the rear slot of a Top Loader, creators can turn that setup into a hip pack or sling-style carry option. That gives the accessory a second life beyond simply supporting a backpack, which is handy for photographers who sometimes want to head out lighter with just a body and lens.

Shimoda is also leaning into more sustainable material choices with this release. The Urban Explore Waist Belt uses CORDURA re/cor fabric, a recycled textile made with recycled PET bottles, while still promising the durability expected from the company’s adventure-focused camera bags.

Giles House, Product Marketing Manager at Shimoda Design, said: “The Urban Explore Waist Belt is a natural extension of the Urban Explore system. It’s designed for creators who need greater comfort and support when carrying heavier gear, while maintaining the clean, functional design Shimoda is known for.”

The belt also uses Shimoda’s inward-pull dual-adjust system, which is designed to avoid stomach pressure points and offer a more refined fit than traditional centre-adjust belts. Shimoda lists the adjustable range at approximately 80cm to 115cm, with compatibility for its Belt Booster accessory if more length is required.
