GoPro MISSION 1 PRO ILS price, specifications and availability announced

GoPro has done something it has never done in twenty-four years: built a camera you can change the lens on. The MISSION 1 PRO ILS is available to pre-order now at $699.99, with a Micro Four Thirds mount bolted onto the same 1-inch sensor and 8K capability as the MISSION 1 PRO we reviewed. What it is

Mechanically it is the MISSION 1 PRO with the fixed lens removed and an MFT mount in its place. The sensor is the same 50MP 1-inch chip, the processor is the same, and the video specifications are identical: 8K60 and 4K240 in 16:9, with Open Gate capture at 8K30 and 4K120 using the full 4:3 sensor area. There is 10-bit colour, GP-Log2, bit rates to 240Mbps, a four-microphone array with 32-bit float audio, and USB-C microphone support. It weighs 6.95oz (197g).

What changes is everything in front of the sensor. You can now mount an MFT telephoto for wildlife, a fast prime for shallow depth of field, a macro, or an anamorphic — on a body small enough to rig where a cinema camera cannot go. GoPro has also built lens-aware stabilisation: enter the focal length and HyperSmooth calculates the correct amount of correction for that lens.

The crop factor is roughly 2.7x without stabilisation, or 3x with it applied — so a 25mm MFT lens gives you around a 75mm equivalent field of view. Worth doing the arithmetic before you buy glass.

Two things you need to know before ordering

These are the details that determine whether this camera suits you, and they are easy to miss.

First: the MFT mount has no electronic contacts. That means no autofocus, no electronic aperture control, and no focus-by-wire — which rules out most photography-oriented MFT lenses from Panasonic and OM System, since they rely on electronic aperture actuation. You will be pulling focus manually and using lenses with mechanical aperture rings. GoPro provides focus peaking and magnification to help, but on a 2.59-inch rear screen that is real work rather than a formality. This is squarely a camera for people comfortable with manual cine glass.

Second: it loses the waterproofing. The standard MISSION 1 PRO is waterproof to 20m without a housing. An exposed lens mount cannot be, so the ILS is weatherproof rather than submersible. If half the appeal of a GoPro to you is not worrying about water, that changes the calculation considerably.

The MISSION Monitor app

Launching alongside is MISSION Monitor, a free professional monitoring app for iPhone and iPad, arriving on the App Store on 2 September. It offers focus peaking, focus assist, zebras, real-time LUT preview and shot overlays, requiring iOS 18 or later.

Given the manual-focus-only mount, that app is not a nice-to-have — it is close to essential. Using an iPad as a monitor makes pulling focus genuinely practical in a way the rear screen does not.

There is also a new Enduro 2 battery, quoted at over three hours of continuous 4K30 recording or over five hours at 1080p30.

Our take

This is the most interesting thing GoPro has done in years, and it is aimed at a narrower audience than the marketing suggests. It won two awards at NAB 2026 including CineD’s Best-of-Show, which tells you where it is pitched.

For a working filmmaker, the proposition is genuinely novel: cinema-grade capture with your choice of glass, in a body you can mount on a bike frame, a drone or a car bumper. Nothing else does that. For an enthusiast upgrading from an action camera, the loss of autofocus and waterproofing means the standard MISSION 1 PRO remains the more sensible buy — and it is currently $100 off.

At $699.99 it is the same price as the standard PRO, which makes the choice one of capability rather than budget. We will have a full review once we have one in hand.
