Billingham has introduced the Icon Messenger Bag, an everyday carry bag that borrows the heritage styling of its much-loved Hadley range and turns it towards commuting, travel and daily essentials. For the many photographers who already own a Hadley and quietly wish it worked as well for a laptop and a water bottle as it does for a camera and two lenses, this is an interesting one. The materials are the reason Billingham bags last decades, and the Icon uses the full recipe: the company’s signature three-layer waterproof Canvas or FibreNyte, full-grain vegetable-tanned leather and solid brass fittings, handcrafted in England. Billingham has been designing and making bags in the West Midlands since 1973, and that construction is why its bags tend to be handed down rather than replaced.
Inside, the organisation is thoughtful rather than gimmicky. A full-width pocket takes up to a 14-inch laptop (Billingham recommends using a case) or C4 documents, and there’s a dedicated internal bottle holder, a wide internal zipped pocket and multiple slip and mesh pockets. Two details stand out as genuinely modern touches on a bag this traditional: a discreet AirTag compartment, and a luggage trolley retainer strap for anyone who travels. A brass key loop and the included SP50 shoulder pad round it out.
Being straight about what this is: the Icon is a leisure bag, not a camera bag. There’s no padded insert, so it isn’t a direct alternative to a Hadley Pro or a Small.
