Panasonic has announced the Lumix S 100mm F2.8 Macro, the World’s smallest full-frame 100mm macro lens. It has the L-Mount, which means it’s compatible with Panasonic full-frame cameras such as the Panasonic Lumix S5 II, S5IIX and the older S1 series cameras. It can also be used with L-mount cameras from Leica and Sigma.

As a true macro lens, the Panasonic Lumix S 100mm F2.8 Macro delivers life-size 1:1 reproduction at its closest focusing distance of 20.4cm from the sensor.

Panasonic has matched the new macro lens with its F1.8 series of prime lenses, the Panasonic Lumix S 18mm F1.8, S 24mm F1.8, S 35mm F1.8, S 50mm F1.8 and S 85mm F1.8. This means that it has a weight (of 298 g) and a size of 73.6 x 82 mm, which are very similar to those existing prime lenses. Consequently, the Lumix S 100mm F2.8 Macro is very compact and light for its focal length and aperture, but also, users can switch almost seamlessly between the lenses, and there’s little to no rebalancing required when the camera is on a motorised gimbal.

Panasonic has achieved this impressive size by utilising a new Dual Phase Linear Motor in the lens. This is smaller and lighter than a standard motor, but it’s said to deliver the same speed and accuracy.
