Panasonic Lumix GH6 announced

News

Panasonic has officially announced that the Lumix GH6 is in development. Predictably with a development announcement, there’s not a huge amount of information available about the Panasonic GH6 yet, but we know it will be the flagship GH camera and it will sit above the Panasonic Lumix GH5 II announced at the same time.

This marks a split in the GH line with the GH5 II being aimed at (serious) vloggers and YouTubers while the GH6 is designed for filmmakers. In addition, the Panasonic G100 is designed for new vloggers, YouTubers and content creators.

New sensor and processing engine

The Panasonic Lumix GH6 will have a new high-speed sensor along with a new Venus Engines processor to enable it to deliver C4K (4096×2160) 60p 4:2:2 10-bit with ‘truly unlimited’ recording time. It’s also said to be able to record 5.7K 60p video.

According to Panasonic, the GH6 will also be capable of 10-bit 4K 120p High Frame Rate (HFR) and Variable Frame Rate (VFR) recording for high-resolution slow/quick motion video.

Videographers can also anticipate the Lumix GH6 having a wide variety of recording modes and shooting assist functions along with ‘next-generation video performance’.

Panasonic Lumix GH6 price and availability

While there’s no information about the price of the Panasonic GH6 yet, the GH5 II is set to retail for £1499 and the GH5S currently retails for around £1,830/$2,100, so it seems likely that the GH6 will sit somewhere around the £1,900/$2,100 mark. That’s assuming that Panasonic wants to make the GH6 a more affordable alternative to the full-frame Sony A7S III.

Panasonic has stated that the Lumix GH6 is in development and that it will be available by the end of 2021.

Panasonic Leica DG 25-50mm f1.7

Panasonic has also announced that there’s a new Leica DG 25-50mm F1.7 lens in development for its G series of Micro Four Thirds camera.

This lens follows the introduction of the Leica DG Vario-Summilux 10-25mm F1.7 ASPH (H-X1025) in 2019.

Thanks to the 2x focal length magnification of the Four Thirds type sensor, the Leica DG 25-50mm f1.7 will offer an effective focal length of 50-100mm.
