Alongside the Nikkor Z 70-180mm f/2.8, Nikon has announced the Nikkor Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR, a super-telephoto zoom lens aimed at enthusiasts photographers. Thanks to its long focal length range and compatibility with the Nikon’s Z-series teleconverters, the Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR will appeal to keen sport, bird, wildlife and aviation photographers.
The Nikon Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR has Vibration Reduction stabilisation built-in, which is said to enable shutter speeds of up to 5.5EV slower than normal to be used when shooting without a tripod or monopod.
In addition, the zoom operates internally, so the lens doesn’t change length when the focal length is changed. That helps to make the camera and lens feel more balanced when shooting handheld.
When paired with the Nikon Z Teleconverter TC-2.0x, the Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR has a focal length range of 360-1200mm, making it very versatile. With the Nikon Z Teleconverter TC-1.4x, the focal length range is 270-840mm.
While it’s not an S-line lens, the Nikon Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR is sealed against dust and moisture. It weighs 1955g and comes with a lens hood, collar and foot.
Nikon constructs the Nikkor Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR from 25 elements arranged in 17 groups. Amongst those elements, there are 6 ED (Extra-low Dispersion) elements and 1 aspherical element to reduce the size of the lens while maintaining image quality across the frame.
Like the zoom, the focusing system operates internally, so the front element doesn’t rotate during focusing. There’s also a clickless dedicated control ring that can be used to adjust the aperture, exposure compensation or ISO value.
