News

Fujifilm has announced the sixth edition of its high-end compact camera series, the Fujifilm X100VI. Although, in many respects, the new camera is similar to its predecessor, the X100V, it has two significant differences: the sensor and the processing engine. In a surprise to few, the X100VI has the 40.2MP APS-C format X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor and X-Processor 5 of the Fujifilm X-T5 and Fujifilm X-H2. This combination also brings the AI-trained Subject Detection and focusing system seen in those cameras. This can be set to detect aeroplanes, trains, cars, motorcycles, animals and birds. The human face and eye detection system is also improved.

Other improvements over the X100V include a base ISO setting of ISO 125, a built-in 4-stop neutral density (ND) filter and a 5-axis image stabilisation system that offers up to 6EV shutter speed compensation.

It’s also possible to shoot 10-bit HEIF images instead of Jpegs (as well as raw files) and the addition of Reala Ace means the X100Vi has 20 Film Simulation Modes.

When the mechanical shutter is selected, the Fujifilm X100VI can shoot at up to 11fps, while using the electronic shutter boosts the maximum rate to 20fps. There’s also a top shutter speed of 1/180,000 sec and base ISO setting of 125.

Fujifilm has stuck with the same Fujinon 23mm f/2 lens, hybrid viewfinder and 3.0-inch 1,620,000-dot tilting touchscreen as the X100V for the new model. As before, the electronic viewfinder has 3.69 million dots.

No camera is complete without the ability to record video, and the Fujifilm X100VI can capture footage at up to 6.2K at 30p with a 1.23x crop. Alternatively, 4K video can be shot at up to 60p without a crop. F-log and F-log2 are on-hand and there are 2.5mm mic and 3.5mm headphone ports.

Fujifilm says the X100VI is 20% more power efficient than the X100V. Some of that saved power is used by the IBIS, but still boosts the battery life to 450 images with the optical viewfinder, around 30 images over the life of the X100V.

Fujifilm 100VI Limited Edition

Fujifilm has also announced a Limited Edition X100VI to celebrate the company’s 90th year. This features the original Fujifilm logo from 1934 on the top-plate and individual model numbers. It comes with an exclusive strap, a screw-in soft shutter release, a lens cap with the 1934 logo and a ‘Generations card’ detailing the history of the series.

Fujifilm X100VI Price and Availability

The Fujifilm X100VI has a price of $1599 / £1599 / €1799 and is set to go on sale on 28th February. It’s available in black and silver.

The Limited Edition X100VI’s price is $1999 / £1934 / €2199. This edition will go on sale globally on 28th March, however, in the UK it will only be available from the Fujifilm House of Photography from 6th April. This delay is because the House of Photography will be closed for refurbishment.
