Apple has announced four iPhone 14 models, the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max both features the company’s most advanced camera system to date with a 48MP Quad Pixel sensor.
The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus both feature a new 12 megapixel main camera with a larger sensor and larger (1.9 micron) pixels. The aperture has also been boosted to f/1.5 for faster shutter speeds and better low light photography. Apple claims this brings a 49% improvement in low-light image quality.
Meanwhile, the front (selfie) camera has a new TrueDepth camera and a larger aperture of f/1.9, again delivering improved low-light performance. In addition, it uses a hybrid focus system that can the subject sharp quickly, even in low light, for better selfies.
Apple has also been working on the image processing and computational photography that takes place inside the iPhone 14. Deep Fusion, which composite images, is now used earlier in the process and on uncompressed images to preserve more detail and deliver better image quality. Apple calls this new system ‘Photonic Engine’.
iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max
The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max both feature Apple’s most powerful camera system to date and it’s all powered by the new A16 Bionic chip that’s claimed to be the fastest chip in any smartphone.
As before, the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max have three cameras, but the main camera features a 48MP Quad Pixel Sensor that is fronted by a 24mm equivalent lens and can output 48MP or 12MP images. This new sensor is 65% larger than the sensor in the iPhone 13 Pro and phase detection-enabled.
In addition, the new 48MP sensor facilitates a fourth telephoto setting, 2x. The 2x telephoto setting uses a central area of the 48MP sensor to create an effective focal length that’s ideally suited to portrait photography.
Like the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max feature Apple’s new Photonic Engine that delivers better image quality than was possible before.
On the video front, Apple has also introduced Action mode stabilisation which is said to be its best yet. There’s also ProRes recording capability and Cinematic mode has been enhanced with 4K capability at 24fps.
