WANDRD has opened general pre-orders for its Magnetic Camera Straps, a modular strap system built around a magnetic lock the company calls CoreLock. Shipping is due to begin on 19 November.

The system first appeared on Kickstarter in July, and the idea is simple: a small magnetic connector lets you swap between a neck strap and a wrist strap with one hand, without unthreading anything from the camera’s lugs. The camera stays fitted with WANDRD’s Torus Links, made from fibreglass-reinforced nylon, and the straps snap on and off as you need them.

There are three straps at launch: a 30mm neck strap, a narrower 15mm Lite neck strap for smaller cameras, and a wrist strap. There’s also a DIY kit that lets you convert an existing strap to the CoreLock system, which is a nice touch for anyone who already has a favourite strap they don’t want to give up.

Why magnetic straps appeal

Magnetic quick-release straps aren’t new, but the appeal is obvious to anyone who switches between a neck strap for walking around and a wrist strap for shooting on the street or at an event. The concern with any magnetic system is security, and WANDRD’s lock design is intended to address this: the CoreLock is a mechanical lock that the magnets help to align, rather than relying on magnetic force alone to hold the camera.

We’d want to spend some time with the system before vouching for it with a heavy body and lens, but the one-handed switch is exactly the kind of convenience that changes how often you actually bother to swap straps.
