Compact production console brings video switching and audio control together

The RØDECaster Video Core is not a camera, lens or lighting product, but I think it is exactly the kind of device more photographers are going to start paying attention to.

RØDE has built this as an all-in-one video and audio production console, aimed at creators who want to switch cameras, mix audio, record content and livestream from one compact setup. On paper, that sounds like something for podcasters, streamers and small studios. But for photographers who are now expected to shoot reels, behind-the-scenes videos, tutorials, interviews and live client content, the RØDECaster Video Core could be surprisingly relevant.

The main idea is simple: instead of running everything through separate capture cards, software windows and audio interfaces, you can connect multiple video sources and manage the production from one system. RØDE says the RØDECaster Video Core can switch between up to four video sources and five fully customisable scenes, with three Full HD HDMI inputs, auto frame-rate conversion and one configurable HDMI output for programme, preview or multiview monitoring.

For a photographer, that could mean a far cleaner setup for filming a lighting tutorial, running a live portfolio review, recording a product photography demo or streaming from a small studio. You might have one camera on you, one overhead camera on the desk, another pointed at the subject, and a scene that brings in graphics or a screen feed. That is the kind of workflow that can quickly become messy if you are trying to control everything from a laptop alone.

Audio is where RØDE’s background really shows. The RØDECaster Video Core includes two studio-grade Neutrik combo inputs with RØDE’s Revolution Preamps, allowing you to connect XLR microphones, instruments or other audio sources. It can also mix, process and route up to nine audio sources, with APHEX processing including EQ, compression, Aural Exciter and Big Bottom.

That matters because photographers often underestimate audio until it ruins a video. A beautifully lit tutorial, interview or client testimonial can still feel amateur if the sound is thin, noisy or inconsistent. Having proper microphone inputs and audio processing built into the same system as the video switcher makes this feel much more practical for hybrid creators.

The RØDECaster Video Core is also designed to work with the RØDECaster App, giving you software-based control for switching sources, building scenes and mixing audio. It can also be paired with the RØDECaster Pro II or RØDECaster Duo using RØDECaster Sync, allowing users to expand their audio and video workflow across RØDE’s wider production ecosystem.

I would not describe this as something every stills photographer needs. But if you are already filming courses, hosting livestreams, recording interviews, making YouTube content or producing social video for clients, this sits in a very interesting space. It gives photographers a way to look and sound more polished without building a full broadcast studio.
