Skylum’s biggest Luminar update of the year upgrades Enhance and Atmosphere, renames Crop as Smart Compositions, and adds an AI Assistant and Signature Printing. The aim is to analyse a photo before changing it.

By Alastair Jennings

Skylum has rolled out the Luminar Fall Update, which it describes as its biggest update of the year. It’s available now across desktop, web and mobile. The theme running through the release is what Skylum calls Scene-Aware Editing. The software analyses a photo’s tones, light, depth, subject, faces and the type of scene before suggesting any edits. The idea is to amplify what the photographer intended, not to override it.

That’s a direct response to Skylum’s own research. According to its recent study on AI among photographers, more than half see AI as an important part of their editing, as long as they stay in control. 73% prioritise a natural-looking image over technical perfection, and 76% have rejected or reduced an AI edit because it looked inauthentic.

What’s new

Enhance now evaluates each image across eight situations, including exposure, colour cast, sky type, highlight and halo risk, and white-balance shift. It then adapts its processing to that shot, with protection for highlights, colour, skies and skin.

Atmosphere has been rebuilt as real 3D volumetric fog. It uses the photo’s depth and light, so fog settles along the ground, thins with height, warms towards the sun and glows around street lamps and headlights.

Smart Compositions replaces Crop. It looks at the main subject, faces and gaze direction, what draws the eye and the type of scene, then tests crops against classic composition principles.

AI Assistant lets you describe the result you want in a few words. It suggests what to adjust and, importantly, where to stop.

Signature Printing lets you add your signature and send finished work to print.

Our take

We like the direction here. “Analyse first, then edit” is a better philosophy than the one-click AI looks that dominated a few years ago. It’s also good to see printing built in: too many great images never leave a hard drive. The proof will be in how natural the results look, and we’ll be putting the new Enhance and Atmosphere tools through their paces on our own files.
