Insta360 has launched the Luna Pro, and it lands directly opposite DJI’s Osmo Pocket 4P with a specification that matches it almost point for point — plus one thing DJI cannot offer: a Leica Summicron lens. Details are on Insta360’s site.
The headline specification
Luna Pro pairs a Leica Summicron lens with a 1-inch 8K sensor, driven by a Dual AI Chip design combining a dedicated imaging chip with a 4nm flagship processor.
Video runs to 8K30fps in Dolby Vision, with 4K120fps and 1080p240fps for slow motion. Crucially for anyone producing social content, it captures native 4K30fps vertical video with 6K oversampling — twist the rotatable touchscreen and you are shooting vertically at full resolution rather than cropping a horizontal frame and losing detail.
There is 2x lossless zoom, 4K Clarity Zoom and up to 4x HighRes Zoom with AI enhancement, plus a classic 80mm portrait focal length and 4K60fps portrait video.
The detachable screen is the clever bit
The feature that genuinely separates this from its rivals is the 2-inch OLED touchscreen, which detaches. It transmits HD video up to 20 metres and carries a built-in wireless microphone.
Think about what that allows. Mount the camera on a gimbal, a car, a bike or across a room, and monitor framing from your hand while it records — with audio captured at your position rather than the camera’s. For a solo creator that removes the single biggest limitation of a pocket gimbal camera: once you put it down, you cannot see what it is doing.
Elsewhere there is 3-axis stabilisation, Deep Track 5.0 with Rapid Focus, slide-to-start recording and twist-to-shoot controls, up to four hours of battery and 47GB of built-in storage. It connects directly to the Insta360 Mic Series, and a POV Head Tracker enables first-person work.
Proper post-production support
For anyone whose footage goes into a grade rather than straight to a platform, the tooling is more serious than this category usually offers. 10-bit I-Log preserves highlight and shadow detail across up to 14 stops of dynamic range, with ACES workflow support — unusual on a camera at this price.
Built-in timecode is the other professional touch, simplifying synchronisation in multi-camera shoots and integrating with Final Cut Pro and Premiere Pro. Alongside that sit Leica colour profiles — Natural, Vivid and Chrome — for those who would rather not grade at all.
How it compares
At US$669.99 the Luna Pro sits above DJI’s Osmo Pocket 4P, which starts at £529. The obvious differences: the Pocket 4P has two lenses, adding a 60mm medium-telephoto alongside its 20mm wide, and claims 17 stops of dynamic range against Luna Pro’s 14. Luna Pro counters with the Leica lens and the detachable screen.
So the choice comes down to what you actually shoot. If you want two focal lengths in one device, DJI still has that alone. If you shoot solo and need to monitor a camera you have put down, or you want Leica colour science and ACES support, Luna Pro makes the stronger case.
We would want to test the low-light claims and how well the detachable screen holds its connection at range — 20 metres is a headline figure, and wireless video links rarely manage their quoted distance in a real environment.
