Panasonic GH6 can now record direct to SSD

News

New firmware for the Panasonic GH6 enables the camera to record photos and videos directly to an external SSD over USB.

Panasonic GH6 firmware version 2.2 makes it possible to record Apple ProRes 422 HQ (maximum 1.9Gbps) or even 4:2:2 10-bit All-Intra directly onto an SSD over a USB connection. The SSD must have a maximum 2TB capacity that is compatible with USB Type-C.

Panasonic recommends using an external SSD whose operation has been confirmed by Panasonic. The company says it can’t provide a guarantee of operation on all devices.

It’s worth noting that it is not possible to record video and photos on the SD or CFexpress card simultaneously while recording to the external SSD.

With data on an SSD, it can then be quickly transferred to your computer or other devices to make the post-production process more streamlined.

The new Panasonic GH6 firmware will be free to download from the Lumix Global Customer Support website from 27 September.
