OM System (formerly known as Olympus) has announced the OM-1, price tag £1,999.99 / $2,199.99, its new flagship Micro Four Thirds camera offering a new sensor design, powerful AF system and up to 8EV steps of image stabilisation.
Sensor & Processor
Inside the OM System OM-1 is a new 20.4 million pixel Stacked BSI Live MOS Four Thirds sensor that’s paired with the company’s new TruePic X image processor. This new processor is up to three times faster than its predecessor and helps the OM-1 achieve high-speed shooting at up to 50fps in C-AF mode with AF/AE tracking, and up to 120fps in S-AF.
Autofocus
Also new is what OM System is calling the world’s first Cross Quad Pixel AF that can focus on patterns of subjects across all pixels and the entire shooting range. This means the OM-1’s 1,053-point phase detection AF system can focus in both vertical and horizontal directions anywhere in the frame.
The OM System OM-1 also employs AI Detection AF, which uses deep learning technology to recognise subjects such as animal (birds, dogs, cats), cars, airplanes, motorcycles, helicopters, trains and more. The OM-1 also utilises Face Priority and Eye Priority AF modes.

Video
The OM System OM-1 can capture 4K video at 60fps and supports H.264 (8bit), H.265 (10bit), and Multi Frame Rate recording. What’s more, the OM-1 can output raw video at up to 12bit 4:4:4 to external devices. Users can also shoot in Full HD at 240fps for slow-motion videos.
The OM System OM-1 also supports OM-Log for greater dynamic range and colour grading. There’s also a new HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) mode for HDR.
Image Stabilisation
Olympus was one of the first manufacturers to launch cameras with IBIS, or in-body image stabilisation, and the OM System OM-1 carries on this tradition with built-in 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilisation. Users can achieve up to 8EV steps of stabilisation when using the OM-1 with M.Zuiko lenses that feature built-in IS.
Body Design
The OM System OM-1 body is dust-proof and splash-proof. Its magnesium alloy body is sealed at key locations to achieve an IP53 rating. What’s more, the camera is also freeze-proof and can shoot in temperatures as low as -10C.
The OM-1 also has a built-in EVF with 5.76-million-dot resolution that provides magnification of 1.65x with a 120fps display performance.
The OM-1 boasts dual SD card slots, as well as a Supersonic Wave Filter to reduce dust and dirt from gathering on the image sensor.
Other OM-1 features include a shutter unit that can last 400,000 actuations, in-camera image rating and Olympus’s popular High Res Shot, Live ND, Live Composite, Focus Stacking and HDR Shooting modes.
