Google has developed a new tool that promises to bring green screen technology to YouTube, unveiling a new feature that lets users replace backgrounds much like you can with still images.
Adobe teased a similar video background removal tool a while back, and Google’s new technology works in a similar fashion.
Google calls its technology Mobile Real-time Video Segmentation, and it works by employing artificial intelligence and machine learning to understand the foreground and background elements in moving images.
“Our new segmentation technology allows creators to replace and modify the background, effortlessly increasing videos’ production value without specialized equipment,” the search giant announced on its blog.
“Our immediate goal is to use the limited rollout in YouTube stories to test our technology on this first set of effects,” Google adds.
“As we improve and expand our segmentation technology to more labels, we plan to integrate it into Google’s broader Augmented Reality services.”
