Canon has announced the RF 24-70mm F2.8L IS USM, expanding its mirrorless RF lens range with a new compact telephoto zoom lens.

The RF 24-70mm F2.8L IS USM and 15-35mm F2.8 also launched today were originally announced as development projects back in February and become the third and fourth optics to join the RF range.

The RF 24-70mm F2.8L IS USM lens is comprised of three ultra low dispersion and three moulded glass aspheric lens elements, which are designed to reduce distortions and aberrations.

Aimed at professional photographers, the RF 24-70mm F2.8L IS USM incorporates Canon’s 5-stop Image Stabilizer from its EF lens range, which employs Dual sensing IS and Combination IS.

Like the 15-35mm, the RF 24-70mm F2.8L IS USM also uses Canon’s Nano USM motor system for high-speed focusing while filming video. It also offers a focus breathing suppression system to prevent the angle of view changing when focusing.

Other features include a customisable control ring alongside a dedicated manual focus ring, weather sealing and a fluorine coating on the front and rear elements to repel oil and water.

The Canon RF 24-70mm F2.8L IS USM price tag will be £2,329.99 / €2,749.99, with a release date set for September 2019.
