Canon has announced a major revamp to its premium compact camera, introducing the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III – price £1149/€1399 – with a slew of advanced specs from Canon’s EOS DSLR range.
Canon G1 X Mark III specs
Most notably among the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III specs sheet is a new APSC-format sensor. At 22.3 x 14.9mm, this new sensor in the G1 X Mark III is the same size as that found in the Canon EOS 80D enthusiast DSLR.
At the same time, Canon has managed to make the G1 X Mark III 16% smaller in size while managing to squeeze in both a 2.36 million dot Organic EL display electronic viewfinder and a 24 – 72 mm (35 mm equivalent) zoom lens.
What’s more, Canon has given the G1 X Mark III its Dual Pixel CMOS AF, the first time this feature has been added to a compact camera. Canon claims that the G1 X Mark III AF system can lock focus on your subject in just 0.09 seconds.
A new Touch and Drag Auto Focus (AF) mode also lets you can take control of the shot by intuitively setting an AF point, providing you with the ultimate confidence to comfortably capture a sharp image.
A panoramic mode is another first for a Canon compact, while a new Eco Mode enables you to shoot with the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III for up to 25% longer, Canon claims.
The Canon G1 X Mark III also employs a new 5-axis Advanced Dynamic IS system in video mode, along with a 4-stop Image Stabilisation system for achieving sharper images in low light.
Like other recent Canon cameras, the PowerShot G1 X Mark III shies away from 4K video recording, offering instead Full HD at 59.94, 50, 29.97, 25 or 23.98fps.
The G1 X Mark III also uses Canon’s latest DIGIC 7 processing engine, which enables the camera to achieve a native sensitivity range of ISO 100 to 25,600.
