Sandmarc has launched its Pro Leather Case for the iPhone Duo, one of the first photography-focused cases for Apple’s new foldable.
Sandmarc is best known to mobile photographers for its add-on lenses and filters, and this case is built around that system. As well as protecting the phone, it has a mount for Sandmarc’s professional lenses, so you can add wide, telephoto or other optics in front of the Duo’s camera.
That’s particularly relevant on the Duo. Unlike the iPhone Pro models, it has no dedicated telephoto camera; it relies on a 2x crop from the 48MP main sensor. An optical add-on lens is one way to get more reach.
The case is made from full-grain leather, with a machined aluminium guard around the camera module. Wireless charging still works through it. Sandmarc has designed an open hinge so the case doesn’t restrict the fold, and the phone can still be propped at a range of angles. An optional front guard for the outer display is included.
Foldable cases are notoriously tricky. Apple’s own silicone case for the Duo has to be fixed in place with adhesive, so a case that leaves the hinge free and still adds a lens mount should appeal to anyone who wants to use the Duo as a serious camera.
We’d want to check how securely the lens mount locks in place and whether the case adds much bulk to an already chunky folded phone. We’ll report back if we get one to try.
