Fujifilm instax launches the Link WIDE 2 printer and Pal 2 camera

Fujifilm has launched two additions to its instax family: the instax Link WIDE 2 smartphone printer and the instax Pal 2 digital camera. Both arrive in late September at £149.99, and both lean into the interactive, app-driven side of instant photography rather than chasing image quality. Details are on instax.co.uk.

instax Link WIDE 2: the wider format gets an update

The Link WIDE 2 is the successor to the 2021 Link WIDE, and it prints the larger instax WIDE format — roughly 86 x 106mm, which is double the width of a standard mini print and the reason this printer has a dedicated following. It has been a while coming; as Fujifilm’s own marketing director admits, the most common request from WIDE fans was simply when a new printer would arrive.

The new features are all about the app. The standout is Photo Mixer: pick favourite images from your camera roll, tap “Mix it”, and the app generates collage-style layouts to choose from, with up to five remixes and custom edits before printing. There is also a genuinely clever QR Print mode that embeds a scannable QR code into the print linking to a URL, a location, a hidden message or even a sound clip — turning a physical print into something that also points back to digital content. Add over 1,600 stickers, frames, filters and text, plus the ability to print a still frame grabbed from video, and it is clearly pitched at a younger, social-first audience.

It connects over Bluetooth 5.1 and can print directly from the instax Pal or, notably, the FUJIFILM X-T30 III digital camera — a nod towards Fujifilm owners who want instant prints from a proper camera.

instax Pal 2: a tiny camera with a viewfinder now

The Pal 2 is the more interesting of the pair for photographers, if only because it is a camera rather than a printer. It is a palm-sized digital camera — and it is important to be clear it does not print anything itself; it captures images that you then send to an instax printer or a hybrid instax camera separately.

The headline change over the original Pal is an optical viewfinder and a look Fujifilm describes as reminiscent of a classic analogue camera, which is very much of the moment given how the retro-compact trend has taken off. It shoots up to 10 megapixels, holds up to 100 photos before you transfer them to the app, takes a microSD card, and adds an instax Animation mode that captures 10 frames and turns them into a flipbook-style animation. There is a 1.0-inch LCD on top for reviewing shots, five filter themes with six effects each, and a camera-angle adjustment accessory in the box.

Our take

Neither of these is aimed at the serious photographer, and it would be a mistake to judge them on sensor size or resolution — that is not the point. They are about the tactile, sociable, low-stakes fun that has driven the instant photography revival, and on those terms both look well judged. The QR Print feature on the Link WIDE 2 is the one genuinely novel idea here, and the Pal 2’s optical viewfinder and analogue styling should land well with the younger audience buying retro compacts.

Two things worth being clear-eyed about. The Pal 2 is a 10-megapixel camera at £149.99 that cannot print on its own — the printing, the film and the app are all separate, so the true cost of the system is higher than the sticker suggests. And both rely heavily on their apps, which is fine while the apps are supported but worth bearing in mind. As a bit of creative fun, though, and as a gift, they are easy to like.
