Phone cages are not a new idea. Almost every accessory maker sells one, and most amount to a metal frame with some threaded holes. The Moment SuperCage does something none of the others do, and with Apple pushing video hard on the iPhone 17 Pro — which the cage now supports — it is worth another look: there is a full USB-C hub built into the frame. The hub is the whole point
Anyone who has tried to shoot serious video on a phone knows the problem. Modern phones have exactly one USB-C port, and you need it for everything at once: power, an external SSD, a microphone, headphones for monitoring, and an HDMI feed to a monitor. Something always loses.
The SuperCage solves that by routing the phone through a custom high-transfer ribbon cable into a hub integrated along the bottom of the frame. From there you get a dedicated USB-C PD port with 100W pass-through to keep the phone charged and power accessories; a USB-C 3.2 port running at 10Gb/s for an external SSD; a full-size SD 4.0 card slot rated to around 250MB/s write, with a V90 card recommended; a full-size HDMI output at 4K60 for monitoring; separate 3.5mm input and output for a lav mic and headphones; and a spare USB-C 3.2 port.
Recording to an external SSD while monitoring on an HDMI display, with a mic plugged in and the phone charging — that combination simply is not possible with a bare phone, and it is the difference between filming on a phone and filming properly on a phone.
Build and mounting
The cage is aluminium, with continuous NATO rails, an Arca-compatible base and multiple threaded mounting points. The Arca base matters more than it sounds: it means the rig drops straight onto a standard tripod head or gimbal without an adapter, which is exactly the sort of friction that stops people using a rig at all.
The phone sits in an adjustable industrial clamp that shifts left and right to suit different phone layouts — useful given how much camera-bump positions vary. Compatibility covers recent iPhones including the 17 Pro series, plus Samsung Galaxy S22 to S24 and Pixel 7 to 9.
The honest caveat: the price climbs
The cage itself is $199, but it ships without handles — and handheld filming with a bare cage is not much fun. Handles are around $40 each, and the cheese plate that adds further mounting points is roughly $67. Bundles run to $279 with Bluetooth handles, or around $414 for the cage, two handles, a cheese plate and cables.
That is real money for phone accessories, and it is worth being clear-eyed: by the time you have built the rig you wanted, you are at a price where a used dedicated camera becomes a genuine alternative. The counter-argument is that the phone is already in your pocket, already shoots excellent video, and the SuperCage is the piece that unlocks it — particularly if you are shooting behind-the-scenes footage alongside a main camera, which is where we would find it most useful.
Reviewers have consistently rated it well since launch, and the Bluetooth handles come recommended over the bare cage, since being able to start and stop recording without touching the screen matters a great deal when shooting handheld.
