Anyone who works two bodies through a long shoot knows the two problems with a camera harness: the weight, and the faff of getting a camera off the harness and onto a tripod. The system is built to carry up to two professional cameras in comfort over extended shoots, wedding, event, sports and wildlife territory, essentially, where you’re running two bodies with different lenses and can’t afford to be swapping glass. But the headline feature is the PRO CLIP, a universal Arca-compatible quick-release system that lets you move a camera from harness to tripod and back without stopping to change anything.
That word “universal” is doing important work. Most harness and clip systems tie you to the manufacturer’s own plate, which means either committing to one ecosystem or living with a plate that doesn’t fit your tripod head. Vanguard’s PRO CLIP isn’t limited to Vanguard’s own quick-release plates, the company says you can use pretty much any Arca-compatible plate on the market. If you’ve already got L-brackets or Arca plates on your bodies, they should simply work, and you can drop straight onto an Arca tripod head without a second thought. For a two-body shooter moving between handheld and sticks all day, that’s a genuine workflow win rather than a marketing line.
Vanguard has also put some numbers behind the security question, which is the other thing that makes people nervous about hanging expensive kit off a harness. It says the system has been tested to hold the largest camera kits, quoting up to 150kg hanging and up to 30kg on a 25cm drop test, with a safety tether providing a second line of defence at up to 90kg hanging and 20kg on the same drop test. Those are stress-test figures rather than sensible working loads, of course, but the margin is reassuring when you’re carrying a pro body and a fast telephoto on each side.
It’s a competitive corner of the market, with Peak Design, Spider Holster and BlackRapid all well established, so the universal Arca approach is a smart way for Vanguard to differentiate. We’d want to wear one through a full day to judge how the weight actually sits across the shoulders, the make-or-break for any harness, but on paper this is a well-targeted product that solves a real, everyday annoyance.
