For years, the features that separated Sony’s flagship Venice cinema cameras from its compact FX bodies were the price of admission to serious filmmaking. With the newly launched Sony FX5, several of those barriers fall away. This is a full-frame Cinema Line camera that packs Open Gate recording and internal RAW, both firsts for the FX series, into a body barely larger than the much-loved FX3, and it reshapes what a solo shooter or small crew can realistically afford. Everything starts with a newly developed full-frame fully-stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor, driven by the latest BIONZ XR2 engine and its dedicated AI processing unit. Sony rates it at 15+ stops of dynamic range in S-Log3, with clean transitions from highlight to shadow, and backs that up with a Dual Gain Shooting mode, new to the FX series, and three base ISOs of 800, 4000 and 12800 to keep noise in check whatever the light.
Where the FX5 really breaks new ground is in how it records. It’s the first FX-series camera to offer 3:2 Open Gate capture using the entire sensor, alongside 17:9, 16:9 and Super 35mm scan modes, letting you shoot once and reframe freely for widescreen, vertical or square delivery. Just as importantly, it writes Sony’s 16-bit X-OCN RAW internally, no external recorder needed, and adds two efficient new codecs, X-OCN C1 and C2, to keep those enormous files manageable through post. Motion is well covered too, with 5K up to 60fps, 4K up to 120fps and Full HD up to 240fps.
The intelligence extends to focusing. Sony’s AI-based pose estimation tracks a subject’s eyes, head and body, holding focus even as the light drops — with Real-time Tracking to keep moving subjects locked. A deep-learning Auto Tracing White Balance draws on both visible and infrared data for more dependable colour in tricky mixed lighting, while switchable noise suppression and a desqueeze function for 1.3x to 2.0x anamorphic lenses give creators room to shape the image to taste.
For all that capability, this remains a camera built to move. The flat-topped body stays compact and light enough for gimbal work, handheld runs and cramped interiors, and now gains 5-axis in-body stabilisation, with roughly twice the roll correction of the old system, plus Active and Dynamic Active modes. A brighter 3.5-type, 2.76-million-dot multi-angle touchscreen and a fresh CineAlta-style menu with a “BIG6” home screen make it quicker to drive on set. Behind the scenes there’s an independent-chamber cooling fan for long takes, a weather-resistant build, plentiful accessory mounting points that spare you a cage, twin USB-C ports with USB PD, a wired LAN socket and the new higher-capacity NP-SA100 battery.
Two optional extras launch with it: a detachable 0.58-type OLED viewfinder, and an XLR Handle Unit that unlocks four-channel, 96kHz/32-bit float audio. A version 2.0 firmware update, pencilled in for August 2027 or later, will bring high-frame-rate X-OCN, Open Gate XAVC S-I, a vertical-shooting interface and a frame-grab tool. Taken together, the FX5 looks like one of the most consequential compact cinema cameras Sony has produced in years.

Sony FX5: Price and availability
The Sony FX5 is available to pre-order from 22 July 2026, shipping from August. The ILME-FX5 kit including the XLR Handle Unit costs £5,200 (€6,000), while the ILME-FX5B body only is £4,700 (€5,400); pricing may vary by region. The optional accessories are the DVF-EL1 0.58-type OLED viewfinder (€750), the XLR-H2 XLR Handle Unit (€900) and the VMC-BNCU1 timecode adapter cable (€100).
