Sony has officially announced the FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM OSS (SEL100M28GM), a new premium macro lens joining the acclaimed G Master line. Designed for Sony’s α (Alpha) E-mount cameras, this medium telephoto macro delivers 1.4x magnification, enhanced autofocus performance, and a host of features aimed at both macro and portrait photographers.

Capable of magnifying subjects up to 1.4 times life size, this lens allows photographers to explore intricate detail in flowers, insects, and other close-up subjects. When paired with an optional teleconverter, the magnification can be extended up to 2.8x, making it ideal for elusive or delicate subjects that require more working distance.
Internally, the lens features two XA (extreme aspherical) elements and two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements, which help maintain edge-to-edge sharpness and reduce chromatic aberrations. The four XD linear motors deliver autofocus speeds up to 1.9 times faster than previous models, all while maintaining quiet operation.
Control-wise, Sony has implemented three distinct focus systems tailored for macro work: a Full-time DMF switch for instant manual override, a Focus Mode switch, and a Sliding Focus Ring that engages full manual focus complete with distance and magnification markings. A dedicated aperture ring adds further tactile control for both photography and video work.
Image quality is enhanced with an 11-blade circular aperture for smooth bokeh and Nano AR Coating II, which suppresses flare and ghosting even in challenging lighting. For handheld macro photography, the lens includes built-in optical image stabilisation, compensating for shift, angular, and forward-backward shake.
This versatile tool is not only for macro enthusiasts. With a focal length suited to portraits and a wide aperture for shallow depth of field, it’s likely to attract wedding and studio photographers looking for artistic bokeh and resolution in equal measure.
