Sony’s FX5 cinema camera has been delayed again, and users may now have found the reason. In August we reported that FX5 shipments had been pushed back over a quality control issue. Since then Sony Japan has postponed the release again, saying only that the delay is “due to production reasons” and that the camera will ship from the end of October.
That’s more than two months after the original release date. The FX5 was announced on 22 July with shipping planned for 21 August. It then slipped to an unspecified date in September, and now to late October at the earliest.
PetaPixel has pulled together reports from owners on the FX5 subreddit, and they all describe the same problem: the rear LCD monitor shifting during normal use. One user said the screen “can physically move out of its proper position, creating a gap large enough that you can actually see some of the camera’s internal electronic components”. They said all three of their units, plus rental units they inspected, had the same fault. According to PetaPixel, Sony acknowledged the issue to one user and arranged a replacement for 19 October.
We should be clear that Sony hasn’t officially linked the delay to the screen. Its only statement is that the postponement is for production reasons, and PetaPixel had no response from Sony when it asked for comment.
If the reports are right, the fix sounds mechanical rather than electronic, which would explain why Sony can’t solve it with firmware. A screen that moves and exposes internal electronics is also a real concern for a camera that will be used on location in dust and damp. If you already have an FX5, check the rear screen, and contact Sony support if it moves.
