Panasonic has rolled out a sweeping set of firmware updates for its high-performance LUMIX S series cameras—namely the S1RII, S1II, and S1IIE—bringing powerful new tools and functionality to both stills and video creators. The firmware, available for free download from 24 June 2025 via the LUMIX Global Customer Support website, reflects Panasonic’s ongoing commitment to expanding the creative potential of its flagship mirrorless models.

Photographers and hybrid shooters using the Lumix S1RII will benefit most from Firmware Version 1.2, which introduces 8.1K and 7.2K (3:2) Open Gate video recording, external RAW output via HDMI, and new support for the ARRI LogC3 profile using the optional DMW-SFU3A software upgrade key. This addition aligns colour science more closely with ARRI’s digital cinema cameras, expanding the camera’s value for professional video production.

The firmware also introduces HEIF image recording in 4:2:0 10-bit format, and a focus stacking function that allows users to merge multiple focus planes for images with extended depth of field and tack-sharp results throughout the frame—a significant upgrade for macro and product photographers.

Autofocus sees notable improvement with a new Urban Sports recognition mode, enabling the system to better detect fast, erratic motion such as skateboarding or parkour. For fine-tuning precision and workflow, users can now customise the AF frame colour with ten options, choose from 17 frame aspect ratios with up to three overlays displayed simultaneously, and even assign functions to the focus ring, including control direction in manual focus mode.

Workflow enhancements include direct transfer of files from CFexpress Type B or SD cards to an external SSD, internal proxy recording while outputting RAW via HDMI, and Capture One tethering support via Wi-Fi or USB-LAN. Additionally, the cameras now support timecode sync via Bluetooth, UVC/UAC streaming, and gimbal compatibility with DJI’s RS 4 Mini.

Firmware Version 1.1 for the LUMIX S1II and S1IIE brings many of the same enhancements, including ARRI LogC3 support, focus stacking, expanded aspect ratios, AF frame colour customisation, and Capture One compatibility—delivering a consistent upgrade path across the Lumix S family.

These updates provide welcome tools for professionals working in hybrid environments, significantly boosting the versatility of Panasonic’s full-frame mirrorless systems and narrowing the gap between stills and cinematic production.
