To commemorate a century since the revolutionary Leica I debuted in 1925, Leica Camera AG has launched a special limited-edition model: the Leica M11 100 Years of Leica “WETZLAR GERMANY”. This collector’s piece honours the company’s birthplace and its longstanding influence on photography, marking the high point of global anniversary celebrations under the motto “100 Years of Leica: Witness to a Century”.
The Leica I, unveiled at the Leipzig Spring Fair in 1925, was the world’s first mass-produced 35mm camera, changing photography with its portability and usability. Today, Leica pays tribute to that moment with a carefully crafted edition of its modern M11 rangefinder, reflecting a century of precision German engineering and storytelling through imagery.
Limited to just 100 cameras and available exclusively through Leica Stores in Germany, the Wetzlar edition features a unique top plate engraving that reads “Wetzlar” paired with the signature Leica script. Technically identical to the standard M11, this edition sets itself apart with a gloss-black finish reminiscent of early M-series cameras—designed to develop a patina over time that reflects its journey with the user.
The control elements—shutter release, ISO, and speed dials—shine in silver-chrome and are intricately cross-knurled. The camera’s elegant look is rounded off with textured black cowhide armouring, inspired by classic vulcanite finishes. Other distinctive details include a black chrome-plated hot shoe cover with a “100” anniversary logo, the replacement of the iconic red Leica dot with a discreet black screw, and a special serial number from 001/100 to 100/100. Each unit also includes a certificate of authenticity.
This edition follows three earlier 100th-anniversary Leica M11 models dedicated to Dubai, Milan, and New York. Future releases for Shanghai and Tokyo are planned for later in the year, each limited to 100 units and sold only in their respective regions.
