Thunderbolt 5 RAID storage targets demanding photographers and video teams
LaCie 8big Pro5 brings 256TB to studios
If you work with huge RAW libraries, multi-camera video projects or high-resolution commercial shoots, storage is one of those things you only really notice when it slows you down. That is exactly where the LaCie 8big Pro5 comes in.
This is Seagate’s latest eight-bay RAID storage system for creative professionals, and it is very clearly aimed at photographers, filmmakers, retouchers and production teams who need a serious amount of fast, reliable desktop storage. With capacities running up to 256TB, the LaCie 8big Pro5 is built for the kind of studio workflow where 8K video, stacked image files and long-term project archives can quickly eat through ordinary external drives.
The headline feature here is Thunderbolt 5. Seagate says the LaCie 8big Pro5 supports transfer bandwidth up to 120Gbps, with speeds of up to 2,800MB/s in RAID 0 and 2,500MB/s in RAID 5. In practical terms, that means you should be able to work directly from the drive on demanding video edits or large image libraries, rather than constantly moving files between smaller drives just to keep projects running smoothly.
What I like about this kind of system is that it is not just a big box of storage. The eight hot-swappable drive bays give you room to manage large projects properly, while the RAID options let you choose whether you want maximum speed, better protection, or a sensible balance between the two. For a working studio, that flexibility matters.
The LaCie 8big Pro5 also looks like it has been designed to sit at the centre of a modern creative desk. It includes three Thunderbolt 5 USB-C ports, with one for the host computer and two for daisy-chaining, plus a USB 20Gbps port. There is also up to 140W power delivery over Thunderbolt 5, so you can connect and power compatible laptops with a cleaner single-cable setup.
For photographers, the appeal is obvious. One day you might be importing thousands of high-resolution files from a commercial shoot; the next, you might be cutting behind-the-scenes video, backing up client work or archiving completed jobs. The LaCie 8big Pro5 is designed for that kind of mixed, high-pressure workflow where speed and capacity both matter.
Seagate also includes LaCie RAID Manager for setup and drive monitoring, Seagate Toolkit Backup Software, a five-year limited warranty and Rescue Data Recovery Services where available. A two-month Adobe Creative Cloud Pro membership is also included, subject to terms and conditions.
