New Remote Framing And Smarter Tracking Arrive For Mobile Filmmakers
DJI has introduced the Osmo Mobile 8P, a flagship smartphone gimbal aimed squarely at creators who want steadier footage, smarter tracking and, most interestingly, easier solo framing. The headline addition is Osmo FrameTap, a detachable remote controller that can be used on the handle or removed for off-gimbal operation, giving users control over framing, recording, orientation, gimbal parameters and screen mirroring from up to 10 metres away.

That matters because phone gimbals have always had a slightly awkward blind spot: once the camera is positioned on a tripod or extension rod, you often have to walk back and forth to check composition. DJI’s answer is remote screen mirroring. According to the media introduction, Android and HarmonyOS phones can mirror directly to the remote, while iOS mirroring works through the DJI Mimo app.
Tracking is the other major story here. The Osmo Mobile 8P supports three tracking routes: DJI Mimo ActiveTrack 8.0, the second-generation AI Tracking Module, officially named Multifunctional Tracking Module 2, and Apple DockKit Smart Tracking. DJI Mimo ActiveTrack 8.0 is designed for more complex scenes, including multiple people and fast movement, while the upgraded module can track people, cats, dogs, vehicles and many objects when using the native camera or third-party camera apps.

The Apple DockKit option is especially handy for iPhone users, as it enables person tracking with the native Camera app or compatible third-party shooting and live-streaming apps. DJI states that DockKit use requires an iPhone 12 or newer running iOS 18.5 or later.
For creators, the practical upgrades go beyond tracking. The gimbal offers upgraded three-axis stabilisation, 360-degree pan rotation, low-angle shooting, a built-in extension rod and tripod, gesture control, composition guides, ShotGuides, one-tap editing, new built-in filters, LUT import, Mimo Slow Shutter, Mimo Action Shot and Mimo Widescreen for a 2.35:1 cinema-style frame. The Multifunctional Tracking Module 2 also includes a fill light with eight brightness levels and eight colour temperature settings from 2500K to 6500K.

Battery life is quoted at up to 10 hours in DJI’s stated test conditions, with the gimbal balanced, level and stationary, using only Osmo FrameTap and no other accessories. DJI also says the gimbal can charge a phone via USB-C when not filming, though using it as a power bank will reduce operating time.
